Shakespeare contest seeks old and new to celebrate 20 years

TribLIVE: Some of the students in Pittsburgh Public Theater's Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest have gone on to become professional actors, such as Gillian Jacobs, co-star of NBC's “Community.” Others go on to college to become another type of professional — teachers, doctors, lawyers and accountants.

I admire and slightly envy the opportunity that the Pittsburgh Public Theatre gives this local youth every year. Most young people who learn Shakespeare only in school see the wonderful elevated language and universal stories in a negative light. They don’t get to truly experience the beauty of Shakespeare because these plays are not only to be read, but to be seen and performed. Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in the Folger Library’s High School Shakespeare Fellowship Program, where I analyzed the piece as a student, audience member, and performer. Studying Shakespeare from multiple perspectives is truly effective in getting a full understanding and appreciation for the classical plays. There needs to be more programs like this in the nation that allow Shakespeare to be not only educational but also fun!
