AutoCAD Tip - Turn the ViewCube Off for New Drawings
autodesk.blogs.com: So you mostly work in mostly 2D in AutoCAD, and you are asking
"How can I set AutoCAD so that the 3D ViewCube is off when I start a new drawing"?
Even in 2D drawing the ViewCube can be helpful in orienting the drawing, but if you really want to disable the ViewCube when you start a new drawing, read further for the solution.

I long ago figured out how to turn my ViewCube off, but this article is still quite helpful. Now, I have to say that the reason I long ago figured out how to turn it off is because it's an infuriating feature that is completely unnecessary. It's much easier for a user to learn/understand how to read their UCS orientation and make use of the UCS toolbar (in Classic Mode). I've been burned more than once by trying to rely on the ViewCube, but as it wasn't aligned properly with the UCS the drawing was placed in the wrong plain and it took quite a bit of work to straighten it out. SO TURN IT OFF!
