Scandal in the Second City: Two Remarkable Shows From Chicago
TIME.com: One mark of success for a local theater is getting national attention: reviews from national critics, a production that moves to New York, maybe even a transfer to Broadway. But local theater has another, perhaps more important, mission: giving life on stage to the events, issues and stories that have meaning for the community it serves. Chicago theater has been justly celebrated for its achievements in the first category, thanks to well-traveled companies like the Goodman and Steppenwolf. Less often noted is how well Chicago theater fulfills its latter mission.

I think this story shows that regional theatre is not just an arena for famous shows scaled down, or a stepping stone to fame, but a place all its own, for the more obscure, but still beautiful pieces of art. The companies in Chicago demonstrated it with smaller stories that hit home for natives of the area, but are so well done that even outsiders are moved. I think that people should really get back to their roots with theatre, and really embed a show in the area that it's from. It may not be a national hit but if it's well done it can be just as moving as a classic.
