Scott Walters: Rocco Landesman: Too Many Theaters?
huffingtonpost.com: Rocco Landesman, the Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, is at it again. A few days ago in Minnesota, Landesman repeated the comments he made at the Arena Stage in January of 2011. As reported by the University of Minnesota's student newspaper the Daily, during the Q & A session Landesman wondered aloud whether "there are too many theaters." He explained, "If there were fewer theaters, they'd have the resources to pay their artists more."

I agree with both Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, Rocco Landesman, and author, Scott Walters in their "Too Many Theatres?" opinion both on limited terms. Walters noted that Landesman is native to New York where there are tons of theatres and that it's really all Landesman knows. It would make sense to cut down on theatres in New York to pay actors and directors more as well as in California where most of the LORT funds go. On the other hand though, Walters brings up a good point about the limited number of theatres in the rest of the country. "We find that the vast majority of theaters are urban; of those in smaller cities, they tend to be wealthy suburbs of metropolises," and increasing the number of theatres would allow more acting and directing jobs to be opened. What has failed to be recognized however is the demand for theatre by the public. If more thatres were created would enogh seats be filled? would there be enough Technicians and Box Office workers to fill the jobs? It's not just the actors and directors that work there. If theatres were closed how many people would lose their jobs?
