Adam’s Ambitious Hellboy Build

Discovery Channel: I remember the first time I ever hung out with Adam Savage solo. It was during one of his visits to D.C., and we went to dinner near his and Jamie’s hotel. You’d think we’d have chatted about Discovery, but actually, we talked about movies. We both LOVE movies. And one movie we both ADORE is Hellboy.

I have always been a fan of Adam Savage, and I think that what he is doing here is really cool. I like to do similar things in my spare time, tinkering with unusual parts and electronics. I also have an affinity for specialty props. I think some of the most interesting props are like the one in this article, where the designer has a crazy imagination and takes a bunch of somewhat commonplace things and mixes them with specialty pieces and creates the prop. Making props like this is kind of like theatre design as a whole, taking objects and pieces from other professions and uses, and giving them a new use in theatre, either visually or technically. I think this process of finding ways to use common things in a new way is part of what makes theatre design so cool. From the article, I also appreciate the lengths at which Adam went to research the pieces and make sure the details were correct. I have found myself doing that for pieces before and I really enjoy the process. Overall I think Adam did a great job, and I enjoyed hearing about his process.

The video and writing from this article were fascinating to me! To see how he used his resources and connections to just get the pictures and materials for this prop was really cool. This video showed all of the process and tedious work that prop makers have to do to make a replica, which is something often over looked. Not to mention how great it must feel to see all your hard work come together to make a finished product. Adam's love for bringing together all these odd bits and pieces to make a really cool prop is amazing to me and has made me think about looking into this fascinating field.

All of Adam's "Man Cave" videos are great, but this one is particularly interesting. It was very cool to hear his thought process on how he started his Hellboy project from scratch. His "order of operations" sounded very well thought out and planned, from the original idea to his current progress. It was fascinating to hear how he gathered all his information and materials as well as the ingenious machining techniques he had to use to fashion some of the parts. I can't wait to see the finished product!
