The Special in Special Effects
Stage Directions: There’s no denying that audiences are generally demanding more out of their theatre experiences. The good news is that innovative manufacturers are giving more SFX choices for less money. So we’re talking about more bang-for-the-buck in a literal sense. And just in time, too.

It would seem that special effects are continuing to gain a larger presence in theatre. I for one am very excited for the future of technical theatre and special effects. The technology that has already come out and what is still forthcoming is fascinating. The industry does seem to be trending towards more film-style effects in live performances, and the growth of special effects companies definitely reflects this. While some may bemoan the loss of more traditional theatre and effects, I think it's great that we are adding all these new toys and tools to the "toolbox." When it's appropriate, some of these effects are straight-up awesome.
