Musical 'Motown' set for Broadway

Variety: The jukebox musical is alive and well: Producers Kevin McCollum ("Rent," "Avenue Q," "In the Heights"), Doug Morris (chairman of Sony Music) and Berry Gordy announced Tuesday that "Motown," a new musical about the founding of the iconic record label, is Broadway bound, with the curtain set to rise sometime in the spring of 2013.

I will be interested to see how this does because at least in my mind, this show seems similar to both Dreamgirls and Memphis. These two show were both very successful and so the market for this type of material is obviously there, but my question is will this new show be distinct enough to find a decent audience? One point raised is that it will include songs from artists like the Supremes, which is at least one of the main inspirations for Dreamgirls. I think if they do it in the right way, there is a sweet area where they can attract the fans of the previously successful musicals while also being enticing for a new audience without seeming like its already been done. Also, as opposed to many jukebox musicals, this show uses the music from several different artists and I’m interested in how they will pull it all together into a coherent story. I’m excited to see it once it hits Broadway!
