Free Online Behavioral Health Screening Program Now Available

Live Design: Behind the Scenes announces an online behavioral health screening program as part of its Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Initiative. These free screenings are completely anonymous, private, easily accessible, and quick to complete.

The entertainment industry has unique rewards, practices, stressors and challenges that are not commonly experienced in the same way in other professions. By its very nature our industry can impact your physical and emotional health with long hours, pressure to push your body, and high workplace stress.

I read the article, and thought - this sounds good! My opinion is that free and easily accessible resources are always good, especially in this field; because, as the article mentioned, theater has some very unique stressors. However, I wanted to see what I thought of the actual software so I went and took their wide range screening. It was very similar to some basic screenings done by doctors offices at regular yearly checkups. My thought is that if there are people who don’t make it to these types of visits, this tech might be helpful if they feel concerned about something but need a push to get help. Once you take the screening, you may be linked to other, more specific screenings. Overall, as a precursor to more and better help, this could be a beneficial tool for people who have never prioritized their own health (mental or physical).

Finally some good news! This was the most excellent and timely news with the incredible stressor of corona at hand. I think at this time, with such job insecurity, professionals are really really stressed and this can help a lot. Mental health is becoming less and less taboo in the industry and it makes me so happy. There's something about the theatre industry that leads people to work too hard and push themselves to the limit. I think there are rarely clear boundaries set, so work life becomes personal. So, having a tool like this easily accessible is so incredible and makes me really hopeful for the future working in theatre. No matter what situation you're in, getting screened is a great idea. It can really help identify feelings and symptoms, especially high stress, that you didn't know were there. I really hope that people are made aware of and utilize this tool. I think it could really help with the stigma around mental health in this industry.

I think these screenings could help more people get a better understanding of their emotions, mental health, and if they should seek outside help. The site has a number of different screening tests available to take. If someone isn’t sure of what they’re going through, then they can take the generalized test that covers a bit of everything, and in the results it suggests taking the more specified ones for anything that raised concerns in the answers. I wanted to know what the test questions were like so I started off with the wide range one. The questions they ask are very straightforward and non-judgemental, so answering them truthfully didn’t feel so shameful. Something that I think is good about them is that they don’t give you a diagnosis or say “you probably have [specific issue] going on.” They say things like “your answers are consistent with symptoms of ____.” Then have resources available should you want to pursue further help.
