While I'm not heavily involved or knowledgable about rigging yet, I do know it's a highly dangerous aspect of theater that can result in injuries or even deaths if something goes wrong. It's shocking to me that there wasn't an industry standard for inspection up until now, considering the hazards involved, but I'm glad that there is now. The article brings up some good points about school theaters - considering oftentimes schools don't have to undergo inspections and make do with meager budgets and rickety old machinery and tools, I'd also be concerned about how it could effect youth and community theaters. But after reading the requirements, it doesn't seem like something that will put less well-off theaters out of business and should help to increase the safety of students and professionals alike, which is always a good thing. Hopefully these new standards will result in better working conditions, fewer accidents and injuries, and a general increase in awareness of how things should work and what is and isn't safe practice.
