Waves At The Heart Of Simple Plan 2025 World Tour
ProSoundWeb: Front of house engineer Frank Joly (Pierce the Veil, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Les Trois Accords) deployed a Waves eMotion LV1 Classic console for the 2025 “Bigger Than You Think!” world tour of multi-platinum Canadian pop-punk and alternative rock band Simple Plan.

Sound board op has always been one of the most enjoyable positions when it comes to back stage crew for me, it looks different depending on what area of entertainment you’re working in and I can’t say I’ve ever seen how the set up works for concerts and venues. Festivals like the one frank worked on, seem to be huge in scale and require different equipment/setup than a theater production ( as someone who’s derived most of their information from the theater side of audio, I've always had a lot of questions about the work style of other entertainment areas- film, concerts, stand up comedy- and hope to have the opportunity to work gigs in those areas as well). The concept of a Swiss Army knife of consoles is also really interesting to me and I do wonder if it’s a standard console for concert audio engineers or if something new has come out that has already surpassed the LV1 in terms of software and compactness.
I love when theatre workers are clearly passionate about their work. Front of house engineer Frank Joly seems so excited to tell us about his Waves eMotion LV1 Classic console and the IONIC 24-input/18-output SoundGrid stagebox with Waves Signature preamps. I’ll admit, I'm personally less interested in the brand names and the specific products as how Joly is using them in the show. At times he sounds like a walking advertisement, but I enjoyed hearing about his mixing process. He said he mixes “old school,” routing everything to the L/R bus. A lot of sound designers and audio engineers have issues moving to digital boards and online DAWs. I’ve worked with guys who sound like a broken record talking about their experiences DJing or mixing on tape, and how the online programs take away the skill and the process. It's nice to hear that this setup caters to that audience. This article was a full advertisement for the Waves eMotion LV1 Classic console and the IONIC 24-input/18-output SoundGrid stagebox with Waves Signature preamps. I’m excited to work as a sound engineer later in my life, and hope that I won’t have to shamelessly promote products to make a living. You can mix well on many consoles. Find one that suits you, or make yourself flexible enough to use multiple.
