I try to keep my comments on these posts away from politics but with the recent state of America I find it impossible to keep my thoughts inside. To me, the path America is falling down is going to be horrible for every single person except the straight white high class men, and even then nobody is fully secure. Protests right now are so imperative if we have any chance in saving the country that so many people want and believe can happen. I understand how the thought of protesting can feel dumb because it's not gonna change a law or make any technical changes but the art of a diverse community coming together to fight for the rights of all people is whats beautiful in a country full of horror at the moment. As for this specific protesting event: I am so happy to see theaters and other influential companies stand up against what is happening because it helps people come out and speak up about their beliefs.
I think the idea of this is cool, that people want to stand in solidarity with the folks in Minnesota. But I’m wondering what this actually accomplishes. They don’t state any demands, they aren’t fundraising. They are just talking, which is nice, but people don’t need “nice” right now, it is not enough. We need action that will actually materially improve people's conditions and abolish ice. The Public’s statement talks about “the values we claim as a nation”, and claim all we want this behavior from ICE is not new or shocking to Black and brown people who have been experiencing this same violence since the founding of the country. The only thing that is new is the state sanctioned murdering of white people in broad daylight. I’m not shocked that only now are people and businesses speaking out and demanding action in such a widespread way but it is disappointing.
I’m glad to see artists standing up in a time of need. People are flooding the streets to protest, and no legislative change is being made. It’s going to take known faces to bring people together. This is one of many examples recently in which people who hold social power need to acknowledge the role they play in history, and take advantage of whatever power they hold. In this case, it’s a face and a name- people will listen to the artists they like, and this kind of performance brings people together to make a statement. This kind of work is vital in bringing people together and protesting the presence of ice in these communities. Maybe a street full of every citizen that resides there is not enough to listen, but people who are known are vital. The coming together of everyday citizens is also mandatory for our current state, in which the federal government is growing in power by keeping people uneducated and divided. Theater brings people together, and you know what they say about artists and educators…
