Universal Pixels brings in-the-round Radiohead show to life

AV Magazine: Radiohead’s hotly anticipated return to touring demanded a live production that matched their instinct for reinvention. Working with a talented group of live production specialists, the band designed a show that moved and evolved with each audience across the 20 dates and five cities of their European tour.

Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of Radiohead, but I must confess that their music is iconic in the fact that it has left a permanent mark on the music industry since the late 20th century. Reading this article about their heavily anticipated upcoming concert was fascinating because I’ve never heard of a concert in the round before. I’m sure they’ve absolutely existed or been executed previously before, but to see it come back for such a famous band to an incredibly advanced technological degree is exciting for any entertainment enthusiast. The complete dedication to a 360 degree approach for all in the round shows how they prioritize every audience member’s experience and understanding of how an arena show should be executed. The fact that nothing is pre-recorded and everything is live further emphasizes the live performance factor and makes the event feel more special to be receiving a uniquely different show each performance. If I ever had the chance, I’d love to see this concert!

I am excited by the prospect of working in the concert industry and working with all the technology that crosses over with theatre and what is different. I think what Universal pixels did with video in this show is super interesting. The article highlights a multitude of features and tech that they had in their system. I think what’s most impressive to me about all this equipment is that they set all of this up for each show and that they were pulling from 70 possible song and working together to make each performance unique. This shows how important collaboration and communication are in any type of entertainment. I think it was smart how they chose to have central communication so that everyone could talk to each other and resolve problems a lot quicker. Overall, the video requirements for this tour seemed to be incredibly demanding, yet they were able to find a way to create a really cool experience for the audience.
