HOCHUL PROPOSES $150 MILLION PRODUCTION TAX CREDIT EXTENSION

www.broadwayjournal.com: Empire State Development, which supports economic growth in the state, currently isn’t accepting applications for the New York City Musical and Theatrical Production Tax Credit. Applicants had to have their first paid performance by Dec. 1, 2025. The proposed state budget announced today “increases the aggregate amount available under the program by $150 million for productions with initial performances on or after December 1, 2025,” according to a state briefing book posted online.

Growing up in a small town where much emphasis was placed on high school sports teams and supporting the success of student athletes, it often felt as though the arts, including student theatre technicians like me, were being pushed to the side. It is refreshing to see that people care and see the importance of the hard work that Broadway and other production industries do, and are willing to go so far to support it. As we enter greater periods of uncertainty, it is nice to know that people are coming together as a community to support a NYC staple that gives so much back to the city. What Jason Laks said about Broadway’s vitality is true: the more productions that are successfully brought to the stage, the more jobs that are generated and other businesses supported. In the future, I hope that other states recognize the importance of their respective theatre industries and support them, in ways that they can, as well. After all, the magic can only happen if people are willing to play the game.
