Elation has really been releasing a lot of products lately. Their expansion into Europe at ISE in Barcelona isn’t particularly surprising, given their continued success. If I recall correctly, they also made a high profile acquisition of X-Laser at the end of last year, which goes to show how successful they must be as a corporation if they are able to outright buy another one. I’ve been fortunate enough to use some of Elation’s fixtures before, namely the Fuze MAX Profile, which really delivered in a lot of ways that I didn’t expect from a moving head. The color performance was particularly unique, as the additive LED array changed how I thought about using the fixture’s color capabilities. Most of the moving heads I’ve used have been subtractive CMY from an arcsource or LED array, so the additive mixing was a nice change of pace. Additionally, Elation’s fixtures seem to be the choice of several major corporations, particularly for large scale installations, such as the Cinderella Castle lighting plot and Luminous show platforms at Walt Disney World.

It's interesting to see some of the new tools of the trade. I'm too young to remember the advent of moving lights or any of the other paradigm shifts in the lighting industry but I still find it fascinating to see the incremental progress in lights from year to year. Out of all of the products mentioned in this article I think that the Heliotraq system is interesting. While it is not the first performer tracking solution I think that having a simplified interface will be helpful for reducing the setup time of the system. I hope that the reduced complexity of this setup will allow for this technology to see adoption in some mid-sized venues rather than typically only being used in the largest and most technically capable venues. Additionally I think that while the current focus on performer tracking is on automated follow-spots, I hope that we will see greater innovation on what it can be used for. I think that there's untapped creative potential in being able to have the full stage wash adapt to the position of the performer rather than having a dedicated spotlight. For example the wash could become cooler or warmer depending on the character even in dynamic action where manually cuing the change is unfeasible.

I am always excited to see what new technology is being showcased around the world. Part of the reason I love theatre is that everyone is trying to find new ways to make it easier, or more interesting. There are new ideas and technologies that are being created every single day. Elation is a company that I have only recently heard of and started looking into more. I had a project for a different class where I had to look into different lighting companies and their products. Elation was one of them that I thought was doing a lot of work to make improvements on their lights and finding new ways to add to the theatre scene. Each of the lights in this list have their own applications and advantages from the Heliotraq designed for streamlined setup to the Rebel Wash 4 with a lot of focus on the color output. I hope that I can see some of these lights in person or have a chance to work with them in the future. I am excited to see what else comes out of Elation and their tech.
