Not to get political again… this is exciting for a variety of reasons. I can’t help but remember Kendrick’s halftime performance last year. That was not only a strong performance but a message to the audience, a warning to our country and a very well spoken nod to our history. Green day is interesting to me, as a punk rock band that got so incredibly popular that even audiences with drastically different political views find themselves in the car with a radical leftist niece singing along to American idiot on the radio. (Ironic. I digress.) I can only dream that I can watch Billy Joe Armstrong pull out a certain rubber mask of a certain someone to start off the Superbowl. It’s very interesting to see how political the Superbowl performances are currently, (hey, it’s just an assumption in 2026, but it’s Green Day come on) I just hope that their band really makes a statement since they have so much of the public looking to them, instead of being our bread and circus.
I haven’t been this excited for a Super Bowl in years. Bad Bunny halftime show, Green Day opening, and potential NE Patriots generational lock in? I had this thought the other night, about how interesting it is to me that the most livestreamed performance in America has been used as a platform of political resistance for the past two years. Even as the US as a whole takes a turn toward conservatism, somehow the halftime performance has stayed sharply critical of our society. I hope that Kendrick Lamar has set a trend with this one. Green Day is known for being outspoken against Trump (namely, changing lyrics from “redneck agenda” to “MAGA agenda” in live performances.) What’s funny about Green Day is that, despite their obvious political stance, they are loved by almost everyone. I feel like I’m going to hear a lot of criticism toward Green Day if they do take a hard stance at the Super Bowl (even though they’ve been very public about their progressiveness and are literally a punk band).
I am definitely very excited about this, and this years super bowl. I am not and have never been a huge foot ball fan, the half time shows, however, always have my attention. As one of the most anticipated and watched events of the year, they have an ability to make a huge impact, and in the past few years there have been some very notable examples of using it as a platform for political activism. Last year’s show with Kedrick Lamar instantly comes to mind. Green Day has always been political, and not quiet about the fact that they are, and Bad Bunny, who is doing the halftime show this year, is the same way. It’s fascinating to me that somehow we have continued to end up with these political statements in a place like the NFL, which tends to lean more conservative. This kind of mirrors the ways in which I’ve noticed people often miss the messages of bands like Green Day or are surprised when they’re “woke”.
This Superbowl is going to be EPIC, and as a big football fan I can’t wait! Sadly my Houston Texans have been eliminated by the Patriots, but there are so many good teams left that the game is sure to be entertaining! When the NFL announced that Bad Bunny was going to be starring in the halftime show, I was so excited! There are not that many performers that can top Kendrick Lamar’s amazing halftime show, but Bad Bunny is definitely one of them! He has some banger songs, is one of the fastest growing artists of this generation, and has an incredible stage presence! Many conservatives were outraged at this decision, and demanded an artist that was “more American”, even though Bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico (which means he is American)! I am extremely happy that the NFL stood by their choice, and even doubled down in a way. Green Day is another amazing group, that has some incredible songs!! At prior concerts Green Day has ad libbed and changed their lyrics to be anti-MAGA. This is just such an epic move by the NFL to not only entertain their fans, but also to antagonize the current administration and its supporters!
GREEN DAY AND BAD BUNNY? Oh... oh, the conservatives is going to be so mad. Last year, I was at a Super Bowl watch party at my friend's friend's house, and I didn't realize his mom was SUPER conservative. When Donald Trump and First Lady Melania appeared on screen, his mom shouted something along the lines of "YEAH GO DONALD TRUMP!" The halftime show shut this woman up so quickly. As it did many other republicans. The Kendrick Lamar Halftime Show was one of the most politically charged things I've seen on public television in my entire life. I'm looking for an encore with that from my friends Green Day and Bad Bunny. I was the trailer for the halftime show this year on TikTok, and the tagline is something along the lines of a Super Bowl for everyone. I can't WAIT to see what kind of putrid hate and terrible discourse this stews up. I'm all here for it!
This year’s Super Bowl is going to be really awesome. I’m not really a fan of football, the Super Bowl tends to be the one game per year that I do actually watch, but I am a fan of Green Day. I was able to see them on their 2024 Saviors Tour in Atlanta, and I distinctly remember hearing the altered American Idiot lyric ‘not part of the MAGA agenda’ and then cheering along with the crowd in one of the loudest moments I’ve ever experienced. I imagine that their performance will be in line with, if not more political, than their performance last year on Rockin’ New Year’s Eve. And honestly, that might be what we need right now. America looks pretty bleak right now, and while a political stunt doesn’t do much, it does offer some assurance that freedom of speech and freedom of expression aren’t quite dead.
