A guide to DC-area theater summer camps

DC Theater Arts: While summer may seem far away with a major snowstorm in our forecast, DC-area parents know that January is prime time for securing coveted summer camp spots — and early bird discounts. The DC Theater Arts staff has curated a list of theater summer camps and classes available for children and teenagers within a 30-mile radius of DC.

As a kid I went to theater summer camp every year, and it was always such a highlight of my summer. From ages 7-12 I went to the same camp, and we would spend two weeks putting up a musical (usually something disney jr.) and I always had a great time. Unfortunately, that theater company shut down, and after that, I went to camp at a few other places, and eventually I started working at some camps like this. I think that summer camp is a really great place for theater to happen. Kids don’t have the same amount of responsibility in the summer, and so doing something fun that they wouldn’t do during the school year can be great. Doing theater can drastically help increase self-confidence. The variety of theater camps available is also important. There are some for kids who are more casual about it, that are just there to have a good time, but there are also some camps that are more serious training, especially as kids get older, which I think is really cool.

First off, theater is one of the best and most productive after-school or, in this case, summer time activity for children of all ages. Theater for children is an amazing way for children to build self-confidence, team-building skills, and memorization skills. Theater can be a safe place for so many children across the world. Even though these children's theater programs are so beneficial to our world’s children, these programs can be almost impossible to find. So when I saw that there was an article written that put some of the best programs together and gave details, dates, and scholarship opportunities all in one place, that will not only boost enrollment for these programs but will also save so many hours of research for parents that they already don’t have! Not only does this list give you all this information, but it also organizes the list by city and age range!
