I really like unions. My family has been involved with them for decades and I’ve developed a great appreciation for what they do. I think it’s important for everyone in our industry to know what unions are available to them, how they operate, and what they do. I think it’s great that this article points out what IATSE is currently doing to better the lives of its members (campaigning for health and retirement benefits for concert touring crews is awesome) as I feel like a lot of times when we discuss entertainment industry unions we don’t really discuss what they’re doing in the world of today. “fair wages, safe working conditions, strong benefits, and respect” is a basic necessity of working in America today, and it’s without the oversight and collective power of unions that the little guy finds himself powerless to change or better his conditions. I am glad unions like IATSE exist and I certainly hope they stay around for a long time.
