Tommy Tune's Archives Will Be Housed at the University of Houston

Playbill: The personal archives of ten-time Tony Award honoree Tommy Tune are going to the University of Houston, where the Nine and Grand Hotel director earned a Master's of Fine Arts in 1964. The collection includes more than 50,000 costumes, scripts, design sketches, choreography notes, photos, and personal letters covering Tune's long career as an actor, artist, director, choreographer, and writer. The collection is coming to the Texas university as a gift from Tune and his sister, Gracey Tune.

I love going to see archives of artists’ lives. I recently went to the Warhol museum where I learned so much about the artist’s life I had not known. The background that I went in with was pretty much the basics: he made pop art and pushed boundaries. Learning about his creative process and the amount of differing forms of media he used was super inspiring. I hope that these archives of Tommy Tune’s work in the University of Houston do the same. The article mentioned that in these archives there will be costume designs which reminds me of the woman who recently visited CMU campus to donate many of her older costume designs. I forget her name off the top of my head, but it was literally a once in a lifetime experience to get to talk to someone who had such a long and influential career in costuming. Especially getting to see her fluid designing process on paper.

As someone nominated for a Tommy Tune Award, I feel like I had to read this article. Before reading this, I honestly had no idea of the history of the awards or of Tommy Tune himself. I just thought it was a fun name for the awards. But it was really interesting to read about him and his history with theatre and with the University of Houston. Knowing that I have probably been in the same theatre space as him at the University of Houston, but also in downtown Houston, just proves what a small world the theatre industry is. After reading his history, the idea of the Tommy Tune archives makes sense, and I think it is really symbolic that they're putting it in the U of H, where Tommy Tune studied. One thing I wish the article mentioned was when the Tommy Tune awards were named after him and his achievements.
