This article reminds me of the one posted last week about the petition to suspend Kennedy Center funding. Her concerts were meant to be youth-focused and with how the current department of education is being used to attack our systems of public education it makes sense why she would not want to support the Kennedy Center as it is currently controlled by this administration. In her public statement she also speaks about how she is a Mexican American immigrant and how she hopes the decision is one that will show other young artists that they should not compromise their beliefs and morals. I think this is just another example of how the current censorship at the Kennedy Center will continue to be a reflection of the greater censorship by the Trump administration. The petition to suspend funding is now at 103,083 signatures and shows how even though it is being suspected, we can still stick to our morals and values.
Given the current state of the Kennedy Center now, reflecting on stories such as these shows how many artists saw the signs of political corruption and took action against it, even when at their own detriment. While it’s empowering to see artists take a stand in their own way against the politics of the Kennedy Center, it reveals more about the expectations we have of artists to exemplify their political standing. We’re in a critical period where our political climate is so polarized and detrimental, we interpret every celebrity’s actions as examples of their personal political/moral values. While this isn’t necessarily for bad reasons, and justifiable given how necessary resistance is, it also ignores much of the nuance in the consequences of actions such as these. Employees and audiences of the Kennedy Center are hurt by this, but given the direction in which the Kennedy Center has gone in firing all voices of dissent and committing to one political direction in favor of the Trump Administration, ultimately these protests are justified.
