'Stranger Things' costume designer dismantle Max's look from season 5
www.thenews.com.pk: As viewers pore over every detail of the closing chapter, the show's costume designer Amy Parris and hair department head Sarah Hindsgaul recently sat down with Us Weekly to unpack some of the visual Easter eggs woven throughout the first installment season, including one particularly complex look tied to Max, played by Sadie Sink.

The first thing I have to say is that from the very first episode, the costumes for this last season has been outstanding, from Holly’s dress to Max’s dream world Meridah style. I think that it is absultuely genius how in the cave Max’s clothes are made up of different pieces that she has picked up while navigating his memories and coming across different places, times, and people! I think it is such a cool and wonderful added element that the boots that she wears are the same boots that we can see young joyce wear in the short flashback memories from her in high school, not only is this such a cool easter egg but it also brings a emotional and storyteller magic that Max looks up to Joyce and see’s her as a badass, evil ass kicking powerhouse that she see’s her self in. Always love to hear the thoughts behind a designers choices.
The costume design of the whole series of stranger things has always been phenomenal. One thing that contributes to this is that the show is incredibly authentic to the time period, they often source pieces that are actually from the 80’s and then have to create many exact replicas of the piece for the actors, stunt doubles, photo doubles etc. I’ve often seen photos online of people posting a character from stranger things alongside a photo of themselves as a child wearing a nearly identical outfit. Another thing the costume design does really well is capturing the characters personalities along with the place they are in the journey. They also pay incredible attention to detail, referencing other pop culture or encopertating easter eggs and hints to other things that happen in the show. In season 5 I thought Holly Wheeler’s Camazotz outfit was particularly exceptional, the whole look capture’s the characters childlike innocence, but sense of adventure and the power she holds, and matches her dnd mini, further incorporating dungeons and dragons the way other aspects of the show do.
As a big fan of the Stranger Things series, since the very beginning, the costumes always stuck out to me as something that had a lot of time and thought put into them. These costumes do so much work pushing along the story and the given circumstances of the characters being set in the 80s, giving background context to some characters and why they are considered outcasts. Lucas being black and Will being gay, the costumes help viewers remember this is not modern day and racism and homophobia are normalized. As for Max, the designer did a really good job in the first season she was introduced in making her look very clearly from a different side of the country as everyone else there. As the seasons progress you see her slowly start to transition into looking more similar to what is popular in Indiana where this takes place. I always assumed the clothes Max wears in season 5 were what she had gathered while traveling through Henry's memories either being his sisters or moms or maybe people from his high school, so this article about the designers choices of this scene was very interesting to me.
