Here’s What’s Entering the Public Domain in 2026
mymodernmet.com: This year, the U.S. public domain will grow even larger, thanks to the addition of thousands of copyrighted books, iconic characters, and artistic masterpieces from 1930. As of January 1, 2026, protections have lapsed for everything from the original Betty Boop to Agatha Christie’s The Murder at the Vicarage, allowing anyone to use or build upon these works for free and without permission.

I love when new things get added to the public domain, as it allows people to create often extremely interesting and original adaptations of classic stories. It's also always exciting when Disney gets something thrown in because the last thing in the world Disney wants is for anything they have ever created to be free for the public to use. So now, not only is Steam Boat Willy in the public domain, but now there is also a prehistoric pluto to keep him company. It's also fun that Nancy Drew has entered the public domain, as she is a seminal detective, and now we might get a knives out style re telling of some of her adventures. I’m also a big fan of the little engine that could, and I had no idea that it was published in 1930. I can't wait till next year when Frankenstein and Dracula join the public domain, and all the fun new stories that will surely come out of that.
