Eye For Film: Costume expert Catherine George on working on films including Mickey 17 and Die My Love

www.eyeforfilm.co.uk: As this year’s awards season kicks fully into gear, it’s a good time to remember all the craftspeople whose work on everything from make-up to production design hugely contributes to the success of films, even if it often does so without drawing attention to itself. In the world of costume, Belfast-born Catherine George has had a stand-out year, providing outfits for Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, Pattinson again in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the ensemble cast of Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother.

Thinking about where I'm studying and what I want to do with my future. These sorts of articles about the diverse industries that going down this career path can lead me into gives me a ton of hope. It's nice knowing that despite really studying only production and design for theater. The knowledge that I gain from my education, not only applies to theater. But also outside industries like the film industry. Granting me a greater diversity in the jobs that I have available to me. It's just really nice to see the reports of those that have been able to very successfully work in both fields. I think it would be really great for me to be able to just take a break from the theatre industry at certain points in my life. Without having to take a break from taking on new jobs as well. There's always some other opportunity that I can take. That doesn't involve theater.

It is very inspiring to learn how Catherine George developed as a Costume Designer for film. The incidents that led her to her role today are truly building on her design. That reminds me of reflecting on my journey as I grow and develop my design style or art creation. I noticed how she originated as a black-and-white film audience, then transformed into a designer who confidently embraces color in her work. Seeing her initial fear of boldly using color, then transforming into a well-recognized designer, I feel her growing confidence in her artistic language and style, as she worries less about her design work standing out from the other design elements on screen. I am glad that I now know her through this interview and got the chance to study her work.

Cathering George has an incredible eye for this. It obviously comes from her punk background, as punks are amazing at everything. Its that eye for the unconventional that comes from such an alternative subculture that really teaches you how to get it down. As someone who wants to do both film and theater, seeing people work in film and be successful makes me really excited for my career moving forward. George is such a badass, and Mickey 17 had WILD costumes. The expendables looked so good. She has such a fun eye for space costumes, and I think that intergalactic travel is the perfect place to experiment and be a little crazy when it comes to costuming. Spaceman was also so fun, in terms of outfits! I've yet to see Die My Love, but it has the love of my life, Robert Pattinson, in it, and the director directed We Need to Talk About Kevin, one crazy movie. She will 100% be giving George the room to go crazy in this one.
