Visions of Musical Theatre Futures at NAMT
AMERICAN THEATRE: The National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals at New World Stages, which ran for its 37th year Oct. 23-24, offers an annual chance to reflect on the state of new musicals and wonder: What does the future of musical theatre look like? As an artist who has performed and worked on music teams for new works, I hoped to see unconventional musicals by underrepresented artists pushing the form. This year I had an added question: How are creators thinking creatively amid tough times?

I love learning about new works of theater, especially ones like the ones that are talked about in the article. I really appreciated that they decided to waive the fees and other requirements to make the application more accessible to applicants who might not have those resources. Val Viagoda’s “three Rs of resilience” are a beautiful reminder to creative people during this time of attempted creative restriction. I am incredibly intrigued by the show ‘Finn’ and would love to see it if I ever get the opportunity. It was a little heart breaking but not shocking that its tour at the Kennedy center got canceled because of how openly queer coded the show is. Another thing I really enjoy is when musicals do not just have the typical “musical theater sound” and introduce audiences to new cultures of music like ‘The King of Harlem’. These musicals give me hope for the future of musicals and theater. I love that there are so many artists getting chances that they would not have been given in the past.
