The Vessel in NYC Hosts Its First-Ever Holiday Lighting Ceremony
www.timeout.com/newyork: For the first time since first opening in 2019, the Vessel is set to host its very own holiday lighting ceremony on Monday, November 17. The celebration will mark the start of Shine Bright at Hudson Yards, the neighborhood’s annual tradition that turns the west side into a sea of twinkling lights.

I’m actually pretty disappointed I can’t go see this in-person. I remember around when the Vessel first opened, my father and I went together as a fun little day trip. It was fascinating going up it and overall just seeing it, the shape is very interesting and nice to look at. However, last I heard, it had closed and I was really sad to hear it. This article made me happy to see it was still around, but I’m definitely upset I can’t go see this lighting spectacle. They have a very interesting space to play with and set up lights, and I’m very curious about how it will look. Also a bit jealous that I csn’t participate in that design process, since I’m sure the shape of the Vessel has a lot of fun parts to play around with in terms of light. I hope that this is not the only one they do and that I can catch it another year.
I have always loved seeing unique architectural lighting. I feel it brings character and amazing looks to any kind of structure. I really am jealous that I won’t be able to see this in person. The Vessel’s lighting looks so cool already. I would love to see what kind of Christmas lighting they're gonna add to it. I like how they're making it a nice event as well, bringing in many different artists to perform, it makes it truly festive for the holiday season. I think it’s so cool that there are about 2 million lights, making it way more than the Rockefeller Center Tree with only 50,000. I also love how people will be able to walk around it with there being 80 landings. I’ve always enjoyed immersive moments like these during the holiday season. Back at home, one of the parks nearby has a drive-thru lighting experience with such a wide variety of different lighting decorations throughout the drive, those are some of my favorite things to do during the holidays.
I didn’t know much about the Vessel beyond seeing pictures of it online, so this article was actually pretty interesting. I’ve never seen it in person and honestly didn’t even realize it had reopened, so hearing it being lit up with two million lights sounds really exciting. I’m not usually someone who actually goes out to see holiday displays, but I do think unique architectural lighting can be really beautiful, especially when it highlights a structure’s shape instead of just decorating it. The Vessel’s design already feels dramatic, so I’m curious how the lighting will change the atmosphere around it. Even though I can’t go see it myself, I like that they’re making it a full event with performances, it feels very “New York holiday season.” I also didn’t know that people could walk up 80 landings, which makes the whole experience sound way more immersive than I expected.
I love when buildings get lit up for the holidays, I find it to be so joyous and fun! The two million lights that are going on this building is kind of insane though, like that is so many lights. Theres a house in my neighborhood that my family and I always used to call the "crazy light house" because they put up a ridiculous amount of Christmas lights. Every year once they were up and turned on we would beg our parents to take a slightly different route home from school so that we could drive past it. It was seriously insane and I'm sure drove their immediate neighbors absolutely insane with all the constant colors and flashing, but it always made me really happy. In New York where this building is I'm sure it's a little more complicated than just getting out a ladder, so most buildings in this area aren't lit up the same way, so I think it's cool that for this very unique building they're giving it a go.
The vessel is quite interesting to me, but I love some intentional architecture- most modern brutalist architecture seems to lack the fun and quirkiness that things like the vessel hold. This is such a weird but lovely way to host a tree lighting ceremony, and I can’t wait to find out more about the structure of this performance, and how the full building wwill in some way light up and be involved. I’m currently picturing a tree in the middle and everyone around it watches which feels quite backwards, but maybe there’s something else in the works for this event. I feel like this is the kind of place that whos in whoville would host a tree lighting at. So many current takes on holiday traditions are so quick to need to turn a profit, which leaves me with so much appreciation for events like this that are truly just about a neighborhood coming together- even if it’s in this strange vessel that tries to push the boundaries of traditional event spaces.
