Stereophonic: this play about an ailing rock band is a must-see masterpiece
theconversation.com: For legal reasons, David Adjmi and Will Butler’s play is absolutely not about the recording of Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours. But like that famous album, it is a dizzying amalgamation of influences, mercurial talents and creativity that sits among the defining achievements of its generation. And like Fleetwood Mac, too, it is hard to pinpoint precisely what witchy alchemy makes Stereophonic work so well.

I have been needing to see this show so badly!! I've heard that the music is honestly just alright, and feels a little awkward because it's inspired and “based off of” fleetwood mac, but it doesnt play anything by fleetwood mac or from rumours. Music aside, I mainly just want to see this show because I'm so intrigued by the set. I think it's a really clever concept and honestly so perfect. Looking into the recording booth is great because it really takes you to a shot from a movie scene. I really would love to see how the actors navigate the upstage and downstage areas. I also know for a fact that this opens so many doors for different settings and spaces with the lighting. I bet there's a really cool scene where the only light on stage is in the booth, which creates a whole new and beautiful world.
Such a good play! Got to see it a few years back now and the script and conversation flow are so beautifully authentic. It feels like you're just watching people lose it on stage. The costumes, too, are stunning. Every time NotStevie Nicks would leave and come back, she was wearing a new and even more beautiful vintage dress. It was truly enviable. The use of real cigarettes on stage can't be good for the actors but the emersion is top teir. Having the correct smell when people are smoking does a lot for the audience. It really shows how many tools are possibly going unused. Scent theater may just be the next big study area! This is, according to my knowlage, a very comprehensive and easy way to understand what happened with Fleetwood Mac as the story mirrors theirs. Dramatic and messy rock stars, it was a very fun watch!
