Review: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s 'Dracula' Delivers a Vividly Told Story with Visual Power and Dramatic Performances

onstagepittsburgh.com: Last night was Halloween, and arriving at the opulent Benedum Center was an experience in itself. Zombies, witches, and all manner of creatures roamed freely through downtown streets on their way to parties and bars. Inside the beautiful theater’s foyer, nearly 3,000 people filled the space, dressed in gowns, suits, ties, and elegant coats.

One of my friends went to this show of Dracula at the Benedum Center on Halloween and she absolutely loved it. She was telling me all about these huge wow moments that stunned the crowd, even saying at one point she almost fell out of her seat. This article was interesting because I loved hearing about all the adaptations they made compared to the original novel. I love ballet so much and I love the original Count Dracula novel, I can only imagine how beautiful this show is. The pictures I’ve seen of this production look absolutely stunning, I opened the article and my jaw dropped at that first picture. The color contrast of that picture is absolutely insane. That picture just draws my eyes so much I feel like I could stare at it for hours. I love how the costume designer worked with the set and lighting designers to make such a beautiful image. That picture is just such a tiny piece of the overall show, I would love to see more pictures or the show itself soon.

I wish I had known about this before Halloween because I definitely would have been in attendance. It’s so nice seeing someone try to faithfully attempt the plot of Dracula. All too often, people want to take a crack at it just to make it a forbidden romance between Mina and the Count and leave out my beloved cowboy Quincy. I looked up some photos and was instantly envious that I didn’t get to see those costumes move through the space myself. The flow is perfect, and the whole vibe is exactly what Dracula needs to be. I feel like ballet is a special good medium for a novel as windy and dramatic as Dracula. Makes me wonder what great pieces of media would work best as ballet. I do fear that since it’s not as popular and considered “high class,” it's likely that many want this work to be done, but there may not be the funding outside of “Halloween Events.”
