Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine Support AI-Generated Voice Usage

Nerdist: AI usage has been a hot-button topic for as long as it has been around. Mixed reviews over the use of AI-generated celebrity voices has left a bad taste in plenty of mouths, including that of Zelda WilliamsOpens in a new tab. On the contrary, others view it as innovative. Actors Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine are in full support of the technology, both licensing their voices to AI audio company ElevenLabs.

What I found most interesting about this article was its use of actors voices to also produce content in a language different than that of the actor, as with Matthew McConaughey's blog, it was being translated and produced into a Spanish voice. If this really is a Spanish-sounding Matthew McConaughey, surely this is a big achievement for AI (despite any drawbacks we can also consider) as it in some way is performing a new function. But, for pronunciations, or certain combinations of letters not typically spoken in their native language or just very differently pronounced, do these versions still produce a convincing result? How much of different native speakers have to be incorporated to bring these models to a better spot? Lastly, I just hope that this company remains in line which what voices can be used and the topics they can cover as I can easily imagine faking certain voice recordings to scam and convince people of things that aren’t true easily.

I find this to be extremely stupid. These celebrities are blind to the fact that this technology is taking the jobs of Voice Actors, and on top of that, it is not doing a very good job of it. What ends up coming out of these AIs is often bland, unexpressive, and inhuman, lacking emotion or any tone. It is uncanny, and a real human should be involved in voicing things at all times. I understand that using it to make your voice speak Spanish is cool and all, but you know what else would be cooler, more respectful to the cultures that speak it, and a good exercise for your smooth brain? Actually learning the language. I understand it can be hard, but honestly, it's extremely good for you and others to learn other languages, especially if you live in America. And if you can’t figure it out, you know what you could do? Employ someone who speaks Spanish to do the reading for you. Seriously, I can't stand this.

My question for both Caine and McConaughey is why? Why are they lending their voices to artificial intelligence? To me, the use of AI to replace voice actors just seems so stupid, as it takes away from people whose entire careers are to voice act. AI may seem like a cheap alternative, but as I’ve mentioned before in many prior comments, something artificial can never replicate something that’s truly human. The thing that's even more confusing about this is that Caine and McConaughey are involved with this project? It just seems to be so counter to the attitude of the rest of the industry, which has mostly rejected artificial intelligence being integrated into entertainment at all. It all just seems so strange? Maybe they are making a lot of money in royalties from lending their voice, but even then it's still odd. I wouldn’t have expected this, but perhaps I was mistaken.
