In Conversation With Costume Designer Stacey Battat
The Gloss Magazine: There’s a strong possibility that you’ve already been acquainted with Stacey Battat’s designs. Most acclaimed for her longstanding creative partnership with director Sofia Coppola, Battat has shaped the visual identity of zeitgeist-defining films such as Somewhere (2010), The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017) and Priscilla (2023), a biographical drama and visual feast chronicling the life of Priscilla Presley, starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi.

I thought this article was really interesting because it shows how much depth and research goes into Stacey Battat’s work, even though her costumes always look so effortless on screen. I didn’t realize how long her collaboration with Sofia Coppola has been going on, or how much trust is involved in their process. I like how she talks about choosing colors and shapes to quietly guide the story instead of just recreating a period look. Her ability to shift between totally different aesthetics, like The Bling Ring’s chaotic 2000s energy and the soft, muted tones in The Beguiled, really shows how much she prioritizes character over trends. I was also surprised at how collaborative her work is with major fashion houses and how she reworks vintage designs into something new. It makes her costumes feel more like thoughtful storytelling than simple recreations. I’m excited to see what she does next.
