How Movies Have A Blockbuster Impact On Abu Dhabi's Economy

www.forbes.com: When heist movie Now You See Me: Now You Don’t debuts on Friday, audiences will be treated to a stream of futuristic settings where a team of illusionists led by Jesse Eisenberg try to stage an audacious robbery. Even though the backdrops wouldn't look out of place in a sci-fi film, not one of them was computer generated.

This article is incredibly fascinating because it surrounds a topic that people who aren’t immersed in the making of movies, may never think about: the movie industry’s impact on places where blockbuster hits are often shot. Abu Dhabi’s desserts and overall attractions cannot compare to CGI or many other places when filmed for camera. The lushness and immersiveness of its landscapes have a profound impact on the emotional weight of films and add to the awe factor when you realize it’s a real enviornment. I think it’s incredibly smart for Abu Dhabi to capitalize on this and turn it into an industry of their own. Given the history of western exploitation in the Middle East, it’s almost a way to claim back power in the media front as the western movie industry is one, if not THE, biggest out there. The sheer amounts of money that producers are willing to pay however, is what truly blew me away about this story.
