‘Girl, Interrupted’ to Premiere Off-Broadway in 2026

TicketNews: The Public Theater in New York will host the world premiere of “Girl, Interrupted,” a new stage adaptation of Susanna Kaysen’s memoir, beginning in May 2026. The production will feature a book by Martyna Majok and music by Aimee Mann. Jo Bonney is set to direct.

So this is really an interesting choice. I am continually surprised by the random movies that people choose to make into staged productions. I do think Girl, Interrupted is a very important book and movie, but I struggle to visualize that story on stage because of how solitary that movie is. It really closely follows one character, and many of the movie’s shots only focus on the main character. These are also the most memorable scenes, as I don’t really remember any of the scenes with heavy dialogue or group interaction. Since theater is so often about the interactions between characters, having a very intense, mostly solo show is a little confusing to me. I do think the book and movie have a lot of emotional weight, which will be interesting to play out on stage. I hope the dialogue is written well, and that the design reflects the both sterile and grimey interior of the psych ward. Those things I think could help the show be successful.

I’ve heard of ‘Girl, Interrupted’ but have never seen the movie or read the book. I’m glad that this article gave a little bit of insight into the topic that it covers but didn’t tell the entire story, though I would have liked more context as far as they still planning on keeping it set in the 1960s, are they utilizing a large cast or casting only a couple of roles. Looking at the creative team already working on the development of this work, this looks like it has got the potential to be a powerhouse show. Reading Sid’s comment above for a little more context based on the movie, I would be interested in how the solitary aspect would not be in the best interest of a staged production as there are a large number of one person shows that have been very successful over the years. I wonder if the combination of the story, music, and choreography would enhance the solitary aspect of the character and help to tell the mental illness portion of the story better.
