Debbie Allen-directed play about the legacy of Maya Angelou eyes 2028 bow
www.broadwaynews.com: A new play with music about the life and work of the late writer and civil rights leader Maya Angelou continues its developmental process, ahead of a 2028 production. “Phenomenal Woman, Maya Angelou” — which takes its title from Angelou’s poem of female empowerment — is being written by Angelica Chéri and will be directed by Debbie Allen.

I am so excited for this play! I am personally a huge fan of shows that are based on real-life history! (even if they are sometimes twisted for the show's message!) I am so excited to hear that Debbie Allan is going to be directing this show! Often, stories about Black women are not told or are inaccurate, so when their stories are told and are being told by people who want to be true to the historical figure, I couldn’t be more excited to learn more and see it! Maya Angelou’s work in her writing, and especially her poems, is going to translate to the theater and lines sooooo well. I am so excited to see what becomes of this show! I think that it is wonderful that this show got started with the work of Maya Angelou’s late son, who was also a Broadway investor. It makes the show so much more personal knowing that her son had a say in the art and work.
