mymodernmet.com: In the past year alone, Chiharu Shiota has staged exhibitions in several countries around the world, including Austria, China, Hong Kong, Italy, and Turkey. But even as 2025 wraps up, the Japanese artist is showing no signs of slowing down. Now, Shiota’s innovative, web-like work has landed in New York for her second-ever solo show in the city.

I’m always really drawn to large, site specific, sculptural installations like this. I really like how they toe the line between visual art and theater in many ways. I also think the distinguishing factor between installation sculptures like these and traditional pieces of flat artwork are that the audience gets to walk around the piece and experience it from new angles, and that the audience gets a much more impactful sense of scale in relation to their size. I think Shiota’s comments on the interconnectedness of life is very astute and I see that reflected in her art. I have seen many installation pieces made with thread, and sometimes I feel like thread is used as a default for web-like installation pieces. But here I appreciate how Shiota has carefully selected how she wants her thread to look and really considered how the materials she uses impact the viewer’s experience.
