Catching up with David Crank

The College of Fine Arts alumnus is an art director and production director in the film and TV industry. His credits include “Knives Out,” “Lincoln,” “There Will Be Blood,” “John Adams,” which earned him an Emmy Award, and “News Of The World,” which brought an Oscar nomination.

It was really interesting to read about his process, as I'm a really big fan of his work on Productions such as Knives Out. The idea of asking questions to establish the story behind these characters before committing anything to design makes total sense to me, but I agree that it is a part that we often skip along the way when we're excited about an idea that we have. I also think that we can sometimes forget to ask the directors these questions, which leads to some disconnect amongst different design elements, or even disconnect between what happens in the rehearsal room compared to what is happening in the loading in. Production design is such an interesting career path to me because it's this really interesting intersection between a lot of different theatrical varieties, including, I would argue, dramaturgy. There is so much research that goes into good production design.
