AFM 2025: Immigration Anxiety Shadows Indy Film Market

I appreciate that the AFM has acknowledged how our government’s actions have affected their industry and the participants within it. It's upsetting that these steps have to be taken, but the fact that they are able to do something to help mitigate some of the circumstances says a lot about how AFM wants this to still be an international event. My heart breaks for those traveling from outside the country who feel they have to use “clean devices” to navigate, mitigate, and circumvent ICE. I can only imagine how the government shutdown has and will affect airports as it's not a simple back to business solution. So many things were put on pause that getting restarted is going to take time to get back to full capacity. The ongoing talks of “100 percent tariff” is still insane. It once again should be looked at through the lens don’t believe it until it happens because a senile old man is trying to strike fear and find retribution for an industry that has called him out for decades and made him the butt of jokes.
As the daughter of an immigrant, I have been horrified since ICE has become such a huge threat to citizens of the United States, for myself and my family and all families feeling the same way. Seeing families being ripped apart because of straight up racism is horrible and I pray for all the people going through this. I hadn’t really connected the dots between the issues of ICE and the government shutdown, I guess to me they were completely separate worries but this article was really interesting to me because it mentioned so many more issues related to the government shutdown that I hadn’t thought of. Neither me nor my family have done any flying since the shutdown, so I haven’t seen the airport issues first hand but I have seen many many videos about it. After reading this article and talking to my dad we are very glad that we didn’t have to deal with traveling, especially out of the country during this shutdown.
