‘The Hunger Games’ New Stage Production Couldn’t Come At A Better Time
www.thedailybeast.com: May the odds be ever in your favor… when trying to get a ticket to the premiere of The Hunger Games: On Stage.
On Oct. 20, the dystopian world of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy will leap from the page onto the stage, making its long-awaited theatrical debut at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre in London.

Oh hi what. I had zero clue that they were adapting hunger games for the stage. Due to the recent release of Sunrise on the Reaping, which I finished in less than 48 hours, I am now back in another one of my Hunger Games era’s. I think that this article very much touches on what Suzanne says herself: that she is done writing unless she has something to say. Considering the state of the world, and the contents of the new book it is clear she had something to say. To see that the first book is being adapted for the stage is so interesting to me, especially since its premiering with the new theatre in London. I hope that it comes to the US particularly as I fear it might be preaching to the choir a bit in other countries. Despite this I am very very intrigued to see how logistically they achieve this, as The Hunger Games involves a lot of fights, violence, weapons, and children.
I learned that this production was happening fairly recently on one of the broadway news instagram accounts. I was particularly interested, and somewhat hesitant, about their outfitting of the theater specifically for this production, as in my head Spiderman: Turn off the Dark alarm bells start going off, but I am hoping for the best. I absolutely adore the Hunger Games franchise, I think they are modern classics in literature and some of the best book to movie adaptations that are out there. It is very fitting considering our current social and political climate that the Hunger Games is getting adapted to a stage play, as well as Suzanne Collins writing more to the world with Songbirds and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping. I am very curious to see what this show ends up being, I wish for its success, but to be honest I am a bit concerned about its production, as one of the main points Collins makes was that the games and the fighting should not be the most interesting thing or else we are no better than the Capitol.
I am so excited for this production! I really hope it comes to Broadway at some point so I might be able to see it. I imagine the tech in this show will be completely insane and mind boggling. This article made fascinating and really good points about staging The Hunger Games in the context of our time. I also love the irony of the location of the production being in the financial district. If that was an intentional choice, that was really well done. The story of The Hunger Games has become a cultural touchstone, especially for a lot of young people who read it in elementary and middle and high school. In addition to being an epic story to tell in any form, I think it’s interesting how they are able to use it as an allegory to talk about things that might be difficult for some to face without that.
I had absolutely no idea that Hunger Games was being adapted to the stage but I am overwhelmingly excited to learn more about it. I think this is a fantastic storyline to bring to the front of entertainment right now. The storyline is so unfortunately relatable to our current lives right now but that's only all the more reason to bring it to the light, that's honestly why I think Suzanne Collins is still writing books even after the original trilogy ended a while ago. Aside from the political implications of the performance, I am so excited to see this. The Hunger Games was one of my favorite book series growing up and I loved watching the movies. Though I would be potentially curious to see how much of the plot line of the book actually makes it into the play, considering significant portions of the book were cut when making it into a movie. I will be looking forward to hearing more about it.
Sometimes I wonder WHY certain productions get translated to the stage. I think that theatre is a very specific medium for art. It’s a lot more intimate than watching a movie or reading a book, and it allows for a much different, often more immersive experience than either. When films and novels get reworked for live performance (The Devil Wears Prada, Mean Girls, and Hairspray to name a few), they often fall flat because they contain stories and themes that were best suited for their original form. This isn’t always the case—spectacle and theatricality were always present in Moulin Rouge, for example, so it made sense to bring it to Broadway. There are also plenty of fails as well—Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark lost over 60 million in revenue and was notorious for the amount of stunt-related injuries it caused. So I can’t help but wonder: why bring The Hunger Games to the stage? What can a live experience add to the story and its themes that you can’t get from the original movie or book? I cant wait to see how this production turns out!
I think it’s really cool that The Hunger Games is being adapted for the stage; I’m so curious to see how the playwright will bring such an intense story to life in this theater setting. The fact that the venue was built specifically for this show makes it even crazier because when does that ever happen? It really feels like they’re really trying to make it as immersive as possible, which makes a lot of sense for a story like this. I also like that the article connects the play to what’s happening in the world right now. The Hunger Games has always been about power and oppression, and it’s wild how relevant those themes still are. The Met Gala comparisons on TikTok were a great example of that. It just proves how much this story still resonates, especially with younger audiences. Even if this is just a cash grab, it's something I will be giving my cash to!
Why can't we just let things be dead. I don't think the mainstream media realizes that. Plain and simple, we don't have to adapt every mega million making book, movie, or play to another media format. But I fear at this point in late stage capitalism we will never be able to free ourselves from the deep addiction and obsession to nostalgia. Let me guess… “hunger games.. The musical!” will be next. Adapting the hunger games to a stage play is the same vibe as a very potter musical. Which is (you've guessed it) god awful, and for the same reasons as why adapting the hunger games into a play is a bad idea. Key parts of harry potter and the hunger games are the visual effects and portrayal of huge frequently changing locations. I just really feel that its gonna be bad and a waste of money. Why don't we just make twilight a musical too?
I have a lot of questions about this. But number one let me acknowledge how cool this could be and how relevant the story is. I recently re-read the hunger games series and to be honest it is a little scary to read it with what is currently happening in our world. I think about those met gala edits and other comparisons that have been made. So, I agree with the article. I think this is such a good and relevant time to get this on stage. However, if I were to attempt a production analysis on this I think it would be 50 pages long. How do you even begin to pull this off…the tech, the fighting, death, complex setting. It kinda feels like it could almost be a cirque style show. I would die to see how they pull this off. And I really hope it is good.
I’ve been a huge Hunger Games fan since I read the books at 12, and the recent release of Sunrise on the Reaping has gotten me back into my Hunger Games era. I haven’t been able to get my hands on a copy of the book yet, but from what I’ve heard about it and what I know about the series and Suzanne Collins’ approach to writing the books, I have a pretty good idea of how it will mirror the current political climate, and recent events. However, I didn’t actually know that there is going to be a stage production of the first book. This is intriguing to me, because I'm not sure how easy it will be to accurately portray events like the cornucopia bloodbath on stage. It could turn out very sloppy and lose some of the importance of the moment. I also think that there is the opportunity to create some very cool practical effects, and potentially some new ground can be broken with the technical director and the set designer.
