Watch Nike and Other Brands Take Over Tokyo’s 3D Billboard

mymodernmet.com: In 2021, a billboard in Japan made headlines around the world. This wasn't like any other digital advertisement, but a fascinating trompe l'oeil. Since then, this 3D digital billboard in the Shinjuku district has continued to play with perspective to create the illusion that characters pop out of the screen, as if it were an oversized balcony.

These ads look visually stunning, I wonder how the ads themselves are formatted in order to create realistic 3D images. Maybe they use Blender to create a realistic rendering to be showcased on the billboard. It’s amazing how realistic these images are, but I wonder if the photos are all taken from the same view because the effect isn’t as realistic from a different location. I know from experience that making something look 3D for one location can lead to odd distortion from other locations. I wonder how they deal with this potential for distortion. I personally would love to see how goofy the ads look as a video file or from the other side of the street. All this to say: I think the ads look incredible, especially the one from Nike. If I ever visit Tokyo, this billboard will definitely be on my list of things to visit.
