Composer Kate Diaz Had Never Written a Musical Before Redwood on Broadway

Playbill: Songwriter, music producer, and multi-instrumentalist Kate Diaz is currently making her Broadway composing debut with the Idina Menzel-led musical Redwood at the Nederlander Theatre. Diaz, who composed the music, co-wrote the lyrics with director Tina Landau, who conceived the musical with star Menzel, who provided additional contributions.

What a dream! Can you imagine getting a call asking if you want to be a part of a production with Idina freaking Menzel? I got to see one of Redwood's first previews at the La Jolla playhouse. This beautiful Musical is an escape more than anything else. The projection designs transport you to another world. Has anyone familiar with musicals would know: you can have a fantastic Musical but still drops the energy ball at moments. Granted when I saw the show it was one of the first previews so much can change during previews: whole songs can be added or cut from day to day. So take what I have to say with a grain of salt. As grandiose as this musical is the songs lulled at moments. Some scenes are songs that felt like they didn't progress the plot forward or have any reason for being there besides just to be there. I hope to see this production at some point on Broadway to be able to compare it to one of the early preview and see how it's evolved over time.

As someone who wants to be a sound designer and also composer, all of it is so so intimidating to me. I feel like even though I know I will graduate in 4 years with a degree that should be the top of my industry, I will still struggle to find myself and my creativity. I often think about what the future holds for composers and sound designers and it is so scary especially because I feel like I don’t have the natural talent that a lot of people in the industry do. In an industry so small and so based on connections, there are basically two people working at the top and honestly it feels like I have no clue what I am doing at all times. Reading this article has made me think about all that I do not know and honestly I should probably get a graduate degree or something. I feel like the path in theatre is to honestly put your down and work but also make connections but also this but also that and it is hard to balance everything. Or maybe I’m just overcomplicating things. This was a super cool article though!
