Introducing DowelLam

www.archpaper.com: Today, StructureCraft announces the official launch of a new brand, DowelLam. In 2017, the company brought the Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) panel to the North American market with the world’s largest automated DLT manufacturing line. Since then, StructureCraft has delivered over 100 projects across nearly every typology, including significant buildings for Microsoft, Princeton University, and Hines.

Dowel Lam Lumber is an extremely interesting material, and I can definitely see its advantages over plywood and other engineered wood products. I’m curious about how these panels react to temperature changes—do they warp or bow like traditional lumber? I would assume not, given the glue-up process, the immense pressure applied during manufacturing, and the added dowels for reinforcement. The reason I ask is that I can see this material being used for a stage deck, specifically as the trap section. In many cases, stages with trap rooms are limited in what can be driven on them. Would Dowel Lam Lumber provide the necessary strength to treat a 4x8 section as a trap plug, allowing us to drive lifts and other heavy equipment over it? This could also be an ideal material for stage decking in general since it would ensure a solid lumber surface for fastening. That way, I wouldn't have to worry about hitting steel framing or concrete beneath the finished floor when securing fixtures.
