Steppenwolf retools its youth theater program

Chicago Reader: When Steppenwolf Theatre’s 2024-25 season announcement came out a couple of weeks ago, it sparked immediate concern for what wasn’t included: namely, any productions for the company’s much-lauded Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) program. Things moved pretty quickly on social media from concern to outrage to mourning.

When I first started reading this article, I got kind of sad. This was because of the mention of the SYA being dropped. it definitely did seem like lots of Clues were leading up to the SYA being scrapped, however that seems that is not what's occurring. I think what the two artistic directors are doing is really important. young adult theater is not just geared towards young adults, it shares lots of important messages for all ages. I think it's very imperative that they are integrating their learning space and the SYA so heavily. I really hope they continue pushing for this change, and that other people learn to appreciate the push for all ages coming to SYA performances. Also, this place seems like it's really talented, and I would love to go see a show there. Also I really like the fact that they use the word intergenerational so much. It feels like a perfect way to describe the need for everyone to come and see the theater, regardless of age.
