Another Cirque artist injured in ‘O’ Island act

www.cirquefascination.com: Nine months after a Cirque du Soleil artist was paralyzed in an on-stage accident during “O” at Bellagio, another cast member has been injured in the same act. The incident halted Friday’s 7 p.m. performance of Cirque’s flagship production on the Strip. The artist, who has not been identified according to the company’s medical-privacy policies, fell from another performer’s shoulders during the show’s Island scene.

It always makes me sad to read articles like this. I understand that part of the amazement and therefore the success of cirque is that it is scary and hard to perform and it seems physically either impossible or dangerous. But I often wonder what it is that makes these actors desire to put their bodies and in some cases lives on the line night after night. Later in the article it mentions how much Cirque was fined by OSHA for the incidents, only $15,625 I think it sort of crazy how you can put a number on a human's physical health like that, and I know it is not exactly how it works, but it is crazy to me that we essentially have to denote the cost of an incident/accident in the first place. I think this is the reason I do not know how to feel about circuses and specifically circuses in general, I find it kind of odd and kind of wring that I am getting entertainment by essentially watching someone risk their health or safety.

This is just really sad. I genuinely hate hearing when people get injured. However, that being said, Cirque du Soleil is an incredibly dangerous art, and those who perform / are involved in it do tend to know the risks that come with their actions. I hope that the person who got injured is doing okay, and that all the family and friends of them have the support they need. I really hope that Cirque values its employees, and is allowing the person who got injured plenty of rest, and fair compensation. I'm also glad to see that they are taking responsibility and posting statements about the injury, however not saying who got injured does make sense, due to privacy reasons. Also two injuries in the same act seems kind of interesting, so I wonder if they are going to make any permanent changes to the show, due to the dangerous nature of this particular Island Act.

This story is genuinely heartbreaking. I can't imagine what it would be like to be performing in Circ thinking you've made it one day and being injured to the point where your life is completely changed the next. I've always been interested in circuses and their safety regulations and factors. I feel like performing in circus can be one of the more dangerous Performing Arts just due to the amount of stunts and acrobatics that take place on stage. This is the first time hearing of a performer becoming paralyzed due to this Vegas performance which is also incredibly heartbreaking. I think the fact that both performers were injured during the same act should definitely make O and circ should reevaluate that act and Implement more safety measures to make this production safer. everyone knows the risks when starting theater but I feel like it is our job as industry professional professionals to minimize the risk to actors as much as possible.
