Clothing characters in identity
The Mail & Guardian: A great film is a tapestry of elements intricately woven together, but one crucial aspect that often goes unnoticed is costume design.
Vosloorus-born Ntokozo Fuzunina Kunene, the talented East Rand costume designer behind film maestro Kagiso Lediga’s latest creation, Classified, played a pivotal role in bringing the characters to life and adding depth to the narrative.

This was such an interesting read. I think costuming is amazing, and learning about the design process is super cool. One of my favorite parts of designing clothing is researching into past influences or time periods, similarly to how Kunene researched Ella’s possible influences. The finding process is also fascinating to me, how Kunene bought some clothes from current stores, and others may have been specifically created. The idea of making identical outfits for the pool scene is so thought through and specific, it was really cool to think about how one might go about that. I definitely agree that when it comes to costume design (let alone all other aspects of design as well in a way) it really concerns the inner feelings of the person and often you have to dig in deep into their personality of psyche and how they decide to portray themselves versus how they feel, etc to properly come up with their clothing. It’s so complex and so interesting and so I love hearing about each scenario when a designer describes their process of going about that discovery of their character.
