Saltburn's costume designer: “Facebook was a huge resource for me”

British GQ: You're always on the outside looking in at Saltburn. The fictional country estate that lends its name to Emerald Fennell's strange and homoerotic eat-the-rich food fight isn't as much a gilded cage as it is a socioeconomic fortress; magnificent, grand and wholly unwelcoming to aliens. As Paul Rhys' goth waxen butler so often likes to remind us: “lots of people get lost in Saltburn”.

I love the idea of social media and the internet as a historical tool. As like a historical database. We can go back in other people's digital footprint like an anthropologist studying cave drawings. We can parse through what was historically accurate through social media posts instead of figuring it out through vase paintings or stone tablets. While it definitely takes some of the thrill out of the research, I think that the idea of Facebook or really and type of social media as an anthropological tool to understand society of specific moments in time to be extremely interesting. Especially with how fast fashion cycles have become in the modern age. Like, although through a historical lens 2016 and 2023 are not that far apart in time, the attitudes and clothing differences between these two years are absolutely astronomical. We can especially see this on youtube, the differences between what was popular then vs what is popular now means that we can have very clear, to the year, fashion dating in shows and theatre.
