Getting The Right Flow – Logical Approaches To The Live Show

ProSoundWeb: The corporate world calls it “workflow,” and in audio, we generally call it “prepping the show” as well as “load in-load out” and “set up-strike.” But none of it is quite adequate in describing effective practices in our overall approach to every show.

Upon reading the opening line of this article, I was truly expecting a really interesting analysis into theatrical language and linguistics, and I was so ready to discuss that. This is not what this article was about. Regardless, I thought that this was a really interesting read. I personally really don’t know much about sound, so I was really intrigued by basically reading a step-by-step guide of sorts to how this particular person goes about their live sound process. The other thing that makes this article so interesting is that there are probably a hundred thousand different ways to complete every task in the live entertainment world. There’s not exactly one hard and fast guide to “how to do every task” and because of that, every person has such a specific way of doing things. Reading this article and what the author suggests is a super efficient way to complete tasks is really interesting knowing that other people most likely have different processes they insist are best, and what the right answer is can be subjective.

This was very cool to read. It was thoughtful of him to write out his ‘tips and tricks’ for loading in a show. The more and more I learn about theater the more complicated I find it to be, but that just speaks to the impressiveness of the field and how cool it is to be a part of. It made me wonder if any of these thoughts could be applicable to the film world as well, for example the aspects of loading into a theater transferring to a studio setting, however it seems unlikely. The beauty of the entertainment industry and theater and film is how it all creates magic, and allows for people to step into a new story or new world, something I am so grateful to be able to be a part of creating. However within each aspect there is a world of differences and unique aspects that keep each field alive. Some may say that theater is ‘dying’ but there is nothing like seeing a live performance, it affects you so so much differently than seeing a recording. And similarly, certain shots on film or editing tactics completely alter your experience, something I think is super cool. Overall it was helpful to read about some load in techniques, and to wonder about their applications in and out of the theater world.
