Best Theater of 2023
The New York Times: If 2023 was a tragedy in the world, on New York stages it was a dramedy year, highlighted not only by serious plays with great jokes, but also by flat-out comedies with dark underpinnings. And though not all 10 shows (and various bonuses) on my mostly chronological list below fit that mongrel category, even the gravest of them seem to have gotten the memo that theater should not be a bore or a drag. It should thrill you into thought or, as the case may be, solace.

I think this list is absolutely incredible, more so because on the list is a show that was recently put up by the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama! I thought A Dolls House was a great show that came together so beautifully. The School of Drama’s performance of it was so captivating and it really did deserve all of the great reviews that it got. Some of my favorite areas of the show were definitely the lighting, video media design, and scenery. The set looked so so so clean and it just gave the house such a modern look to it, and we can’t forget about the snow that fell to the stage floor during the last few moments of the show. The lighting and VMD paired together made for the perfect combination of spooky, especially when Nora goes into her trance where she hears voices.
