'Waitress: The Musical' Team Talks Movie Musical Version in Theaters

variety.com: After Broadway shut down due to the pandemic, “Waitress” received an arts grant from Chuck Schumer’s office that allowed the production to reopen in 2021. Sara Bareilles, who wrote the music and lyrics, said this opportunity inspired her and the team to make the most of their time back on stage by shooting a live recording.

I have never watched the musical Waitress but I have listened to it so many times. I think that Sara Bareilles is a musical genius and I am so excited to hear that they are thinking of shooting a live recording! That is something I definitely will want to watch. I am very intrigued to them thinking of using a real baby to emphasize the intimacy and emotion of the performance, making it more of a film piece rather than a musical recording. I honestly feel like with how they are filming it, I would not want to hear the audience reactions. The close up shots will be nice for really feeling the emotions of the actors and I feel like having audience reactions will feel like a laugh track and interrupt the watcher. There is quite the resilience and endurance with this show that makes it so beautiful and healing for the audience.

Waitress is one of my favorite musicals to ever exist. EVER. The love I have for this movie is absolutely insane and I cannot WAIT to watch this musical in theaters. I saw this show on Broadway during the 2021 revival with Sara Bareilles, and it was an absolutely RELIGIOUS experience. I’ve been a fan of the waitress soundtrack for a very long time as I use so many of the production’s pieces for auditions and performances so seeing this show live, it was so fulfilling to me. I again saw Waitress on their Broadway tour and it was incredible. I think it is so important that these musicals are being documented and brought to theaters. Live performance tickets are so expensive and this way, people can enjoy the love of Broadway musicals without breaking the bank. It is also amazing for the people who would love the chance to see the musical again (in other words, me!)

I really enjoyed Reading this article. I thought it was really exciting that they’re turning Waitresses into a filmed movie musical version that is coming out in theaters. As someone who loves theater this is really exciting to me because I haven’t been able to see Waitresses in person, but I’m familiar with a lot of music and I’d really love to see it performed. I think this is generally a really good one because Broadway tickets can be really expensive and especially for people who do not live near Broadway or the city or theaters will have the opportunity to see these works. The recorded version of Hamilton was really cool and really exciting and it was able to bring so much joy to so many families and I think that a recorded version of Waitress would be able to do the same thing. Also waitress I feel like has been able to bring in people who aren’t normally into theater interested in this art so it could be really helpful to make theatre accessible.

I think it’s so awesome that the Waitress musical is having a theatrical release. I think that releasing filmed versions of musicals is such an amazing way to get more people interested in live theatrical performances (since it’s so much more accessible to watch a pro shot than spend a whole bunch of money on a ticket if you’re not sure if you even like theatre much). I have heard that a difficult part of releasing filmed versions of musicals and plays is dealing with paying people and contracts and stuff, but in an ideal world where all contract issues could be magically solved, I wish that every Broadway-type show would eventually have the filmed version released to the public. It would be such a fun way to introduce more shows to more people. It never will replace the live viewing experience, but if you just want to test it out or literally cannot actually go watch the show or it closed ten years ago, it would be great to be able to still support the work instead of just watching a bootleg, which will happen if there’s no official version.
