Seeing Theatre’s Future in Warsaw

AMERICAN THEATRE: Members of Theater Mitu, our Brooklyn-based company, traveled to Warsaw in early September, a full day before the Generation After Festival was set to begin. Upon landing, we saw a city of 1.7 million people basking in a brilliant sun—and we were fantastically jetlagged. The clarity and sparkle of the light was filtered through the lush greenery and vibrant energy of contemporary Warsaw.

This article reminds me of a bunch of local theater festivals I went to in the summer of 2022. I think that theater that is regionalized is really great for communities and community building. One of the things that really caught my attention in this article was how theater reflected the political landscape in Poland, and had productions that showed how the artistic community perceived some of those political decisions. I think that the ability to hold a mirror up to society is one of the most powerful aspects of theater, and one that helps maintain my love of the art form. Theater has a unique empathetic ability that I believe comes from watching real people have experiences that you can relate to in some way. The show from this festival I’d want to see the most was “The Art of Living” by Katarzyna Kalwat, about how important connection is in our current society.
