Design Unveiled for Expanded Institute for Contemporary Art in Pittsburgh

News - Carnegie Mellon University: Carnegie Mellon University unveiled the design for the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art’s new 29,000-square-foot home, prominently located in the new Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences at the crossroads of the university’s campus and the city's iconic arts and cultural institutions along Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh. Designed by ZGF Architects, the new museum will nearly triple the Miller ICA’s current size, with galleries and public programming spaces that will foster cross-disciplinary inquiry and community engagement.

I think that this is some great news for the university and for the state of the arts at CMU. This project represents the fact that CMU is willing to make significant investments in the arts on campus, in addition to its new investments in engineering, sciences, and computer science. I have never actually gone into the Miller ICA, but the nearby signs have always been interesting and I have been intrigued. This news may serve as an impulse to actually go out and visit. After all, it is our next-door neighbor in Purnell.
I am wondering what will happen to the now-vacant original gallery. I don’t know how big the space is because I have never actually been inside, but it does seem like it could be a useful amount of space, with a loading dock already built. We are very short of space in Purnell, I wonder if we can have some of that space…

This is great news to me. Anything that pushes the art scene in Pittsburg would be greatly appreciated. Although there is some good art in Pittsburg it sometimes feels uninspiring, especially on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. It is right next to Purnell which is a great inspiration on my walk to the building. I was discussing this with a friend, but I have felt unmotivated to make art here, which was never a problem back home in New York. I was wondering if this is an effect of my environment. I feel like I need to be in a place with good art to keep being inspired to improve my work. I must get over this because I want to make good art again, I have to use this lack of motivation and influence to maybe try new mediums or new forms. I believe ones setting influences their work, so I wonder if my art will change in my four years here.

I heard about the relocation of the Miller ICA last year, but I didn’t know it was relocating to somewhere that’s so close to campus. From the rendering and description, it sounds like the footprint of the space will be very spacious, which is exciting as it allows for many more opportunities exhibition-wise. It also sounds like they will be using parts of the building as classrooms and offices. I think CMU currently lacks spaces for students to sit and work around campus, so this could probably help solve the problem a bit. However, I hope they still leave enough space for students to create, design, and exhibit. It would be great if it had multimedia rooms where we could host small events! Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the building will be open before my graduation, but hopefully the overall architecture will be done before Summer 2025 so I can see it.
