Woolly Mammoth to host free evening of work by Native artists

DC Theater Arts: Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company will host A Mammoth Showcase: An Interdisciplinary Gathering of Native Artists on January 29 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., to support the company’s ongoing commitment to Indigenous communities. This free event is part of the wider ambitions for the national tour of Madeline Sayet’s Where We Belong, with the goal that each producing partner creates and sustains long-term relationships with local Indigenous artists and communities.

The Wooly Mammoth Theatre is known for being an incredibly diverse company. Not only serving home for The Strange Loop but also Ain’t No Mo’. Two recent stellar Broadway shows that center blackness unapologetically. The theatre also is open to constantly pushing norms. And this article solidifies this mission. I really appreciated this articles descriptions of the different artists and creators that will attend. The biographies for each of them was neither too long nor too short. I also think that the Wooly Mammoth chose a wonderful lineup that encompasses different facets of the Indigenous experience. I think I am especially interested in Anthony Hudson who covers queer films which is something I am personally a fan of. I also noticed that this article includes a land acknowledgement from the Wooly Mammoth. Which is also quite fitting. Overall this event seems to be one that is for the indigenous community rather than profiting off the indigenous community. Not only because it is free but also because it is described in a collaborative way that aims to build community through art. Which is a mission I admire.
