Pittsburgh Opera Opens a Brilliant ‘Ariodante’ at the CAPA

onstagepittsburgh.com: Pittsburgh Opera continued the roll it’s been on this season with the company’s premiere of George Frideric Handel’s classic Ariodante last evening. First performed in 1735, then left to languish in obscurity for two centuries, the opera was brought back to life in dazzling fashion by a stage full of talent that stretched from the orchestra to the singers; from the stage crew who built the brilliantly designed set to the lighting; from the choreography to the costumes, and to anyone else involved in the production not yet mentioned.

Ariodante is a show I quite want to see. Although opera isn’t one of my main areas of interest, I believe that there is a lot of merit in the art form and its specific type of storytelling. I personally love how opera sung through style allows for music to be the main vehicle of expression. This glowing review highlights the set which from the pictures looks stunning. NingNing’s use of trees and vines truly helps set the audience in a more naturalistic setting. I am also quite fond of the costume work in the show. Specifically the more neutral colors and flowing skirts. There is also a recurring theme of dots throughout the set and clothing. I personally quite like how the costumes seem to tie the characters closer to their environments. I am also quite happy that the show is selling so well. I hope that it does sell out. The show seems to be very well from what the reviewer described it and the technicals look amazing in the images attached.
