Students Behind Cancelled High School Production of Indecent Frightened of Hateful Attacks

Playbill: On January 5, a high school production of Paula Vogel’s Indecent was cancelled in Jacksonville, Florida, in what students believed was an act of antisemitic and homophobic censorship. Playbill initially reported on the then-unfolding story at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts shortly after student Madeline Scotti posted an Instagram video announcing the production’s cancellation, citing Florida’s recent “Don’t Say Gay” law as the culprit.

This is just making me mad, the laws that were passed recently are truly horrible and just sheltering kids from a very young age from the modern world. But on top on that administrators at all levels of primary education are begging to silence students. For this particular case it seems that its the students who are pushing for this show to happen, it is important for this show to happen because it is a historical event that continues to relate to modern struggles of censorship. The Parental Rights in Education Law shouldn't even relate to this case because these are high school students not k-3rd. I really think that the student should perform this play and they aren’t allowed to perform it in Jacksonville they should get to live stream it so that the entire theater community can support them in there stance. I hope that these students get heard and that this helps start change for Florida’s education system.
